Fatigue Analyses Under Constant- and Variable-Amplitude Loading Using Small-Crack Theory

چکیده
Studies on the growth of small cracks have led to the observation that fatigue life of many engineering materials is primarily “crack growth” from micro-structural features, such as inclusion particles, voids, slip-bands or from manufacturing defects. This paper reviews the capabilities of a plasticity-induced crack-closure model to predict fatigue lives of metallic materials using “small-crack theory” under various loading conditions. Constraint factors, to account for three-dimensional effects, were selected to correlate large-crack growth rate data as a function of the effective stress-intensity factor range (∆Keff) under constant-amplitude loading. Modifications to the ∆Keff-rate relations in the near-threshold regime were needed to fit measured small-crack growth rate behavior. The model was then used to calculate smalland large-crack growth rates, and to predict total fatigue lives, for notched and un-notched specimens under constant-amplitude and spectrum loading. Fatigue lives were predicted using crack-growth relations and micro-structural features like those that initiated cracks in the fatigue specimens for most of the materials analyzed. Results from the tests and analyses agreed well.

متن کاملApplication of a strip-yield model to predict crack growth under variable-amplitude and spectrum loading – Part 2: Middle-crack-tension specimens
In previous work, fatigue-crack-growth tests were conducted on middle-crack tension, M(T), and compact, C(T), specimens made from the same D16Cz (clad) aluminum alloy sheet. These tests were conducted over a wide range of stress ratios (R = Pmin/Pmax = 0.5 to 0.75) to generate crack-growth-rate data from threshold to near fracture. These tests were used to generate the effective stress-intensit...
متن کاملA Dynamical Coefficient Mechanics Model for Fatigue Crack Growth under Constant Amplitude Loading
Almost all load bearing components usually experience variable amplitude loading (VAL) rather than constant amplitude loading (CAL) during their service lives. Although many models have been proposed on this subject, but life prediction under these complex situations is still under constant improvement. The present study aims at evaluating residual fatigue life under CAL due to application of t...

Fatigue-crack-growth tests were conducted on compact, C(T), specimens made of D16Cz (clad) aluminum alloy under constant-amplitude loading, a single spike overload, and simulated aircraft spectrum loading. Constant-amplitude tests were conducted to generate crack-growth-rate data from threshold to near fracture over a wide range of stress ratios (R = Pmin/Pmax = 0.1–0.75) using the new compress...
